Popcorn at the Palace

Sunshine, sunshine sunshine. One bright, sunny summer day after another. Aren’t you just sick to death of the relentless monotony of beautiful weather?

Get indoors and hide from it for a few hours, that’s my advice. And for a nostalgic cinematic treat for the whole family, the place to go is Playhouse Square.

As part of its summertime “Cinema at the Square” series, the Palace will be showing Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory Saturday, August 10 at 2:30 and 7:30, and on Sunday, August 11 at 2:30 p.m. only. Among the weirder family films of all time, this movie will delight children of any age — especially when those orange Oompa Loompa faces are magnified to, like, 25 feet on the Palace’s giant silver screen. At least, it’ll delight them if it doesn’t completely freak them out. A must see!

Of course, if your taste in movies tends toward the more classically thrilling, the kiddos might also get a kick out of King Kong, showing on the same schedule the following weekend, August 17 and 18. Either way, you’ll get pre-feature cartoons, and the delightful tones of the Palace Theatre organ, all for the bargain price of $5 at the door, $4 for kids 12 and under.
