Kitsch Me, You Fool
When a garage sale flier specifically mentions “velvet Elvises,” it sets it apart from the rummage rabble. So you can have great expectations for the upcoming FLAME (Flea Market & Art Exchange) coming soon to your neighborhood.
The event is being organized by the Creative Impetus Gallery (cig), formerly of the Federal Knitting Mills building on Detroit Avenue, and now taking up quarters in the old Gospel Tabernacle on the corner of West 25th and Church Avenue. Owners Marina and Kristien Marquez-Zenkov are transforming the space into a gallery where the work of local, new and self-taught artists will be showcased. Eventually, they hope to host charrettes and arts programming, including offerings for children and youth. To get a glimpse of what’s in store, you can stop by their next show on Saturday, September 28, when you can take a look at the multi-media found-art work of Alexandria Wyant.
But getting back to the item at hand: the gallery, with the support of Exhibit Builders and OCNW Development Corporation, is sponsoring The Church Avenue FLAME as one means of bringing “arts - and kitsch - to the people.” The big event will take place on Sunday, September 15, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Exhibit Builders parking lot at the corner of West 25th and Church Avenue. If you’d like to hawk your own crafts, art, jewelry, or other garage sale or flea market items, call Marina or Kristien at 216/861-3062. Costs for space range from $5 for half a parking space to $20 for a table and half a tent.
Call that same number to be added to cig’s mailing list. You’ll stay up to date on future shows, and send a message that you support neighborhood-based arts activities.
