News from Your Post Office

Posted on Monday 5 May 2003

As you may know, Mama Says owes a big debt to the United States Postal Service, and not just for the mostly reliable delivery of the hard copy edition. It was letter carrier and local good guy Bill Merriman who, drawing on his expert knowledge of who-lives-where, was able to help hook up the earliest “Mama Says” families back in 1997.

So when the post office asks for help in spreading some news, we’re delighted to oblige. This information comes from Westpark station manager Joe Cunningham:

• Control that beast! They don’t really ask for much, these letter carriers. Just a big-enough mailbox, a shoveled sidewalk, and — most important — a little animal control. Keep your dog out of the path the letter carrier follows to your box. And if you see dogs running loose in your neighborhood, call the city dog warden at 216-664-3069. (Puppies under the age of 3 months may also be accepted at the Animal Protective League. Call 216-771-4616 for information). In some cases where unchecked dogs pose a serious safety hazard, mail delivery may be curtailed for a whole block.

• Running behind on those Saturday errands? Westpark is the only office on the west side that stays open until 3 pm on Saturdays. It’s conveniently located at 14500 Lorain, across from the West Park RTA station.

• Before you leave for vacation, stop your mail. It’s always been easy to fill out a card for a temporary hold at the post office, but now you can also place the request online when you visit www.usps.com
