Get Busy
Monday, May 5th, 2003I’m not convinced that idle hands are actually the devil’s workshop. It seems like if we parents could stand to leave a kid idle long enough — without a TV, refrigerator, matches or handgun with which to amuse himself — some amazing things might happen. But the reality of this modern life is that most households contain most if not all of these things, and that they often prevent our kids from working up a really healthy boredom.
So parents have a couple of choices: either move to Amish country or help kids find activities that will challenge and interest them.
The Cleveland Municipal School District and Cleveland State University will host a Summer Fun Fair highlighting some of the city’s best opportunities for kids this summer. Agencies and institutions representing a wide range of activities for kids in grades K-12 will be showcased at the Joseph E. Cole Center for Continuing Education at CSU on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Parents can learn about unique leadership opportunities or register kids for summer camps and more while kids have fun in the arts & crafts area, enjoy refreshments or get their faces painted. Some lucky students will also earn scholarship money from CSU.
Although there will be a lot of information available about CMSD’s innovative programs, you needn’t have a child enrolled in the public schools to participate. Many of the featured programs are open to all kids.
The Cole Center is located at 3100 Chester. There will be free parking. Call Susan Speizer at 216-523-7987 for details.
